These attrition and retention rankings do not attempt to explain the causes for the attrition at the law firms. There is almost certainly no single cause that can explain all of the "missing" associates, but possible contributing factors might include associates being informed they will not make partner or will only reach non-equity partner status; layoffs; or associates who choose to leave because of a lack of work-life balance, opportunities to lateral to a different firm or work as in-house counsel, or high billable hours requirements.
